Featured Bride Jean On Her Breathtaking Monique Lhuillier Dress & Wedding Personals

 

Some brides-to-be know exactly what style of wedding dress they want. While others start their search with no idea at all. Then there are those, like our featured bride Jean, who go in with a set look in mind and completely surprise themselves with what they end up wearing down the aisle.

Part 2: Saying Yes To The Dress & Personals

Once the venue and date were confirmed, Jean had only four months to look for a dress. Because of her busy schedule and short timeline, she sometimes attended bridal salon appointments alone and her sisters and mother joined whenever possible. One afternoon, she and her oldest sister, Joanne, made another visit to Monique Lhuillier on the Upper East Side. The esteemed fashion designer is known for her frothy tulle skirts, dramatic silhouettes, and decorative flourishes. Jean, on the other hand, envisioned herself wearing something classic and simple, but with a modern sensibility. So when her sister pointed out the Fleur gown, she didn’t think much of it at first. “I would never have chosen the dress for myself. It was completely the opposite of what I ever pictured myself in!” says Jean. The blush colored design featured a voluminous, multi-tiered ball gown skirt and strapless lace top. “After trying the dress on for my mother and other sisters, it was clear this was the one.” Jean accessorized her stunning gown with a cathedral length veil, also by Monique Lhuillier, and Ferragamo patent leather sandals.

 

 

 

When it came time to choose florals, Jean drew from her bridal attire’s romantic and ethereal feel. Her bouquet featured Madylone peonies, O’Hara garden and majolica spray roses, ranunculus, astilbes, and sweet peas in soft shades of blush, ivory, and white.

 

 

 

Jean and Bryan made sure to honor their shared Korean heritage in the celebrations. “We really wanted to incorporate our Korean background, in someway, through out the wedding. So Bryan and I each had our own hanbok, a traditional style Korean dress, custom made for the rehearsal dinner,” Jean explains. “They were modern versions though, and we each got to choose our own fabric and design, which was really cool.” Jean’s ensemble showcased a formal jacket paired with a beautiful soft pink gown featuring a bell-shaped silhouette. The next morning, the bride and her bridesmaids got ready while wearing gorgeous silk robes adorned with patterns inspired by traditional Chinese brushwork from Kim + Ono.

 

 

 

 

 

The bridal party also wore updated iterations of the traditional hanbok. “We picked the silk fabric together. Since the design was very simple, we decided to include an asymmetrical strap and matching decorative tassels as fun details. My sisters, who are more conservative, styled their tassels in a classic way to resemble a pendant. While my other bridesmaids tied the tassel in a really interesting pattern over the tops of their dresses, which ended up looking fashion-forward.”

 

 

No stranger to fashion himself, Bryan looked most handsome in a custom designed Ermenegildo Zegna tuxedo featuring a stylish white jacket and black pant combo. “Bryan loves wearing scarves and he is a fan of Paul Smith and Shanghai Tang,” Jean says. “Since his groomsmen wore their own tuxes, Bryan gave each of them a scarf to help unify the party’s overall style. They were also made of a patterned red silk, which played into the Asian aesthetic and looked really nice with the hanbok.”
