Nhung & George: Soft Blossom Romance at The Foundry

Nhung and George began dating in August 2018. Although they met through Bumble, Nhung remembers the spark that kicked off their relationship as feeling natural and effortless, like when two strangers meet and know they’re going to be lifelong friends. “We are so different but also alike. We both have a great sense of humor and style, but George is messy and I’m neat,” she says. “We balance each other in ways we never knew we both needed.”
While many couples plan elaborate, social media-ready proposals, Nhung and George approached their engagement with the same relaxed, easy-going attitude that brought them together. The event took place on April Fool’s Day 2023 while they were on vacation in Turks & Caicos. “George isn’t the most romantic let’s just say that,” Nhung jokingly admits. “So, we planned for him to ask at sunset.” With some time to kill before popping the question, he took a quick dip in the ocean while she waited on the beach with the ring.

After looking at a few venues in the New York City area, Nhung and George visited The Foundry and were drawn to its ‘industrial, blank canvas’ character. Located in Long Island City, The Foundry is a beautifully restored building marked by original architectural features and brick work dating back to the 19th century. The couple knew that a lot of planning and thought to decor would be needed to make the space feel personal and inviting. “We really liked that it had different rooms,” Nhung adds, pointing out that a unique floor plan, which includes a courtyard, main space, and greenhouse, could be used to transition guests through different parts of their wedding.

With the venue locked down, Nhung could start thinking about what she was going to wear. She had two stipulations going in – nothing white or ballgown. Online searches kept bringing her bridal designer Danielle Frankel – “every time I saw something I liked, her name popped up.” And after spotting a particular dress modeled in a fashion show, Nhung made an appointment at the designer’s NYC studio. “They told me it was the showroom sample and the only one that had ever been produced. I wouldn’t be able to try it on anywhere else,” she reveals. Nhung’s breathtaking choice took shape in a strapless, relaxed-fitted silhouette featuring pleated and hand crinkled silk wool in a pearl color. A modern take on a classical Grecian gown, fluid draping twisted around the body ending in a subtle train. “The pleating detail and the way it falls was so pretty,” the bride says. “And I loved the slight curve of the back.”

Jewelry and accessories complemented Nhung’s simple and timeless style. She wore triple drop pearl earrings, which glistened against her loose wave hairstyle and a natural makeup look, along with shimmery Jimmy Choo heels. An elegant hand-tied bouquet completed her bridal ensemble, featuring a seasonal mix of peonies, Juliette garden and spray roses, delphiniums, tweedia, and campanulas with touches of Italian ruscus. George dressed the part of groom wearing a classic navy suit by Giorgio Armani trimmed with a spray rose boutonniere and Church’s shoes.

The couple married on June 9, 2024. “It was raining earlier in the day,” Nhung remembers. “But the skies cleared, and it was perfect.” Taking place in the Courtyard, the ceremony featured gardenesque blooms, styled to bring soft contrast to the venue’s industrial framework, which succumbs to a lush ivy blanket during spring and summer. Bride and groom walked down the aisle together, escorted by their dog, Luna, and exchanged vows before freestanding arrangements as friends and family looked on. “Luna received the most compliments,” Nhung says with a laugh. “Everyone commented on how well behaved she was. And her beautiful flower collar.”

While guests toasted the newlyweds and grazed on appetizers during cocktail hour in the Greenhouse, the Courtyard was changed over for the reception. As the sun was starting to set, everyone headed to dinner where they were welcomed by a romantic scene. Decorated like a picnic soirée, the tablescape unfolded in a series of bud vase arrangements and low centerpieces blending peonies, roses, delphiniums, campanulas, stock, and wax flowers in pale peach, pink, buttery yellow, blue, white, and ivory with notes of greenery. “I wanted the flowers to warm up the space and add classic charm,” Nhung says, noting how candlelight enhanced an intimate, al fresco atmosphere. Guests’ place settings were personalized with pressed flower name tags, all handmade by the bride (she also made the seating chart display from a discarded wooden frame found on the sidewalk).

In addition to love, the day celebrated the joining of the couple’s cultural backgrounds starting with cuisine, which included mini pork buns, Che Ba Mau, a traditional Vietnamese desert, and baklava. Jordan almonds also nodded to George’s Greek heritage while Nhung’s ancestry was honored with a lion dance by the Chinese Freemasons. “They got everyone up from their seats after dinner and brought them into the main space for a performance. It was a great transition because getting people to the dance floor can be difficult,” she recalls. “Then the music from our band went off and we partied through the night.”

We asked Nhung if she’d like to share any favorite memories from her wedding. “Looking around at dinner felt like being in a magical night garden – we couldn’t believe we were in the city,” she answers and goes onto thank their photographer, Justin Jun Lee, for capturing the candid shots of guests enjoying their meals and good conversation. “He also brought us up to the rooftop for photos with the sunset. We were finally relaxed by that point – it was so nice to have time that I could spend alone with George.”
