Choosing your Wedding Flowers to Complement your Venue

If anyone has ever planned a wedding before or helped plan a wedding, you would know that there’s always some sort of vibe, theme or feeling that the couple wants to achieve. As a wedding designer, I often meet couples who are still in the process of establishing the overall look and feel of their wedding, yet torn as to which direction to head in with their flowers. With so many inspirations available these days (Pinterest, Instagram, Google, etc.), it’s easy to get overwhelmed with ideas and want to do a little bit of everything. My advice to couples is to start with the venue! Your venue will automatically set the tone. Your job (and our job) is to then complement the space with your décor.

Intimate Wedding at Andy Warhol’s Soho Loft

Before SoHo became a shopping mecca, its cast-iron architecture and cobblestone streets were a bohemian playground for stars of the New York’s art scene. Recently we got a peek at one of downtown’s most storied addresses, Andy Warhol’s Wooster Street Loft.

Now housing the newly-minted Soho Arts Club, this loft was once the home and studio of the famed artist. And, for one magical evening, it was the perfect venue for an intimate wedding.

We set the scene for a candlelit Jewish ceremony with an elegant, four-posted chuppah, draped with sheer ivory fabric. Each front post was adorned with a bouquet of hydrangea, garden and spray roses and phalaenopsis orchid blooms.

Natural Beauty at Liberty Warehouse

Romantic flowers and rustic touches struck a perfect balance at this Brooklyn waterfront wedding.  You might remember bride Jennifer’s natural, dimensional bouquet from this recent bouquet recipe featuring blush La Perla roses, cream dahlias and cascading jasmine vines.

Vows took place under a stunning, squared archway of curly willow branches, adorned with cascading greenery and studded with clusters of roses and hydrangea. As with the bouquet, the look was natural and rustic with lots of dimension and texture.

Mason jars, accented with burlap and navy-blue satin ribbon, held simple clusters of baby’s breath to decorate chairs. Wooden boxes held lush blooms for low reception-table centerpieces.

Click through to see every lovely detail, captured by one of our favorite photographers, the brilliant Agaton Strom.

Ideally located between Central Park and the Hudson River, Mandarin Oriental sets itself apart with breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and exquisite attention to detail.

Stunning bride Carolyn could not have chosen a more fitting venue for her elegant celebration. Classic wedding flowers, in a timeless palette of blush-and-white, were designed to be both traditional and on trend. Ranunculus joined white garden roses and blush Keira roses in a compact, rounded bridal bouquet with fully wrapped stems. Bridesmaids, wearing a striking shade of royal blue, carried snow-white Tibet roses and ranunculus, while the sweet flower girl carried a delicate nosegay of blush roses.

Lauren’s Ethereal Floral Head Wreath

Ethereal Floral Crown Anthony Vasquez 3

Lauren and David’s engagement photoshoot is sweet perfection. You may remember the tutorial and flower crown recipe we shared when this charming bride-to-be asked us to design an ethereal, bohemian-chic floral head piece for her engagement session.

We got to know Lauren’s lovely sense of style while working on designs for her big day next June. For this engagement session, she envisioned blush roses and shared an inspiration image from a gorgeous French wedding. Instead of standard roses, we suggested delicate, light-pink spray roses, and ethereal baby’s breath. Cool-toned, seeded eucalyptus complimented the intricate, ivory petals of tiny wildflowers, including poetically-named astrantia million stars…
