In an age when people are meeting through dating apps and social media, the beginning of Ashley and Joe’s love story maybe considered old-fashioned by some. “We met at work,” Ashley recalls. “I had recently joined the company and a co-worker introduced us in the hallway.” At that moment, a seed had been planted with the perfect conditions for them to get know each other and eventually fall in love.

Naturally growing in the wild, Queen Anne’s lace is often used in rustic arrangements. At the same time, it brings texture and lightness to more classic flower displays.

The story behind the flower is as interesting as its rounded, nest-like appearance. Queen Anne, the wife of King James I, was challenged by her friends to create lace as beautiful as flowers. While endeavored in her project, she pierced her finger. The flower’s red-purple center represents droplets of her blood. In the language of flowers, Queen Anne’s lace symbolizes sanctuary and protection.

The Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony is expressed through customs symbolizing the sacrament of marriage. Aerin and Steven chose one of New York’s most beautiful churches to exchange vows. This week, we take a look at how the couple blended modern details with tradition on their wedding day.

Part 3: Ceremony

“I loved having our ceremony in a church. Holy Trinity Cathedral is the church that we attend regularly and our priest married us. Everything felt very close and personal,” recalls Aerin.

Located in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Holy Trinity Cathedral was the first Greek Orthodox Church to be established in New York City in 1891. The Romanesque Revival exterior opens up to a breathtaking space that evokes the look and feel of an exquisite box of jewels. The interior is adorned with Byzantine mosaics, stained glass imported from Italy, and a striking gilded dome over the altar.
