Boutonnieres Abounds

The boutonniere – buttonhole en Français – has long represented masculinity, sophistication, and stylish creative expression.  Today an integral part of every dapper groom’s get-up, the possibilities for boutonnieres are virtually limitless, as more and more men are vouching for unpredictable bouts in a wide variety of colors and shapes.

While your man may not be up all night perusing Pinterest for his perfect floral contribution, there are plenty of exciting options when designing a boutonniere that compliments your bouquet and overall color palette.

“The bride’s bouquet is one of our main focuses as floral designers, so we always love to have a little fun with the groom’s boutonniere!” says our Creative Director, Lindsay Saltz, “We almost always take a flower that’s featured in the bridal bouquet so that they complement each other. Most importantly, the flower has to be sturdy. It’s always tempting to use something like Sweet Pea or Cosmos – something unique; but we have to be practical so that the boutonniere still looks lovely by the time they say I do.”

The Great Gatsby

When we asked our Creative Director, Lindsay Saltz, what inspiration she draws from cinema, Great Gatsby came to mind immediately.  “After that movie was made, brides were crazy for the ‘Gatsby-themed’ wedding and we drew a lot of inspiration pics from this scene.  It’s just an abundance of beautiful flowers and the way they did it was pure perfection. I personally don’t love orchids but that scene made me want to!”

So how are floral ceilings actually constructed?

“The ease of the on-site installation process really depends on the venue and what we have to work with,” explains Creative Director Lindsay Saltz, “Some venues have the perfect ceilings to attach wires and other necessary mechanics to…and others not so much. But once we get going and develop a rhythm, the actual hanging of the flowers becomes fairly easy. We mostly rely on wires and string to create a hanging treatment or chandelier.”

Meet Bridal Bouquet Illustrator Ashley Cecil

Ever wish you could keep your bridal bouquet  as beautiful as the day you walked down the aisle? Working directly from a photograph, Pittsburgh-based artist Ashley Cecil will illustrate a gorgeous replica of your bouquet.  We caught up with Ashley about how she got into bouquet illustration, creating a family keepsake, and her love of poppies and peonies.

How did you get the idea to begin illustrating bridal bouquets?

During the summer of 2015, I did a “DIY artist residency” that involved painting bird, bug and botany specimens at several museums here in Pittsburgh and three local high-end florists. Friendships were forged with the florists who hosted me to paint their arrangements, including Stephanie at The Blue Daisy Floral Designs.  We kept in touch, and at some point it dawned on me that florists such as Stephanie have a highly engaged audience of individuals who are in love with their wedding bouquets and want to savor them for a lifetime. I floated the idea of the bouquet paintings to Stephanie and two other florists and got an overwhelmingly warm response. That was the beginning of it.

A Bachelorette Bash at Bride & Blossom

Bride-to-be Sarah and her best girlfriends celebrated her upcoming wedding by learning about floral design at the Bride and Blossom studio. The girls created vibrant arrangements with stunning shades of pink roses, peonies, tulips, and accents of lush greenery.

The class was guided by our Wedding Coordinator, Lauren Fernandez.  “Teaching and floral design are my two passions, so it was an absolute pleasure teaching the girls how to create an arrangement,” she says, “They did an amazing job! I loved how each arrangement was unique even though all the girls had the same flowers and vase. That’s my favorite part of floral design!
