Jay Muse – Owner/Chef Lulu Cake Boutique

When Jay Muse graduated from culinary school, he did what every aspiring pastry chef dreams about – he opened up a specialty bakery in New York City. “I just wanted to make muffins,” he says looking back. Cake wasn’t going to be a mainstay on the menu. Then one afternoon, a customer walked in and asked him to make a cake for her wedding. The rest is history.

Today, Jay is chef and partner of Lulu Cake Boutique in Scarsdale, NY. Headed by a dynamic team of bakers and designers with resumes that list Per Se, JoJo, and Auquavit, the award-winning bakery is sought after by couples who want their big day dessert to make a statement in style and taste. We’ve been fortunate to see Lulu Cake Boutique’s masterpieces in person, serving as the sweet punctuation mark on a handful of Real BB weddings. For these reasons and more, we couldn’t wait to interview Jay for our Industry Influencer series.

Couples are going to great lengths these days to personalize their wedding in order to make sure that the celebration is one-of-a-kind and unforgettable. We’ve seen everything from live painters and wedding bands playing curated song lists to bouncy castles being incorporated to take the post-ceremony party to the next level. And while these all sound great, at the end of the night, every couple wants to ride off in the getaway car with a shared feeling that their wedding was a sincere expression of their style and personality from start to finish.

If music be the food of love, play on. – William Shakespeare

Much rides on the shoulders of a wedding band. After all the formalities of the marriage ceremony are said and done, the wedding band is responsible for playing the soundtrack that accompanies the newlywed’s once-in-a-lifetime celebration. This is where Claudio Marquez and Mod Society come in. Through music, Mod Society stimulates the emotions, mood, and energy that create memories people remember long after the last song is played.

Shortly after moving to New York City in 2009 to pursue his career, Claudio watched as fellow musicians picked up gigs (and made money!) playing at weddings. Interested yet unsure how to break into this type of work, he decided to form his own band. In its early days, Mod Society was just a trio that played while guests sipped cocktails waiting for the reception to begin. At present, Mod Society is an ever-evolving music collective known for keeping wedding dance floors jam packed well into the night.

Michael Fitzgerald George Plionis – Designers Of Til Death Do Us Part Jewelry Collection

On an unseasonably warm afternoon in early Autumn, we met with Michael Fitzgerald and George Plionis at Fitzgerald Jewelry in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Michael is originally from Ireland and runs Fitzgerald Jewelry along with wife Hiroyo. Born in Australia, George is a designer and Assistant Professor of Product and Industrial Design at Parsons. In collaboration, they created ‘Til Death Do Us Part,’ an engagement and wedding collection.

Admittedly, when we first heard about wedding jewelry that flirts with beliefs about love, death, and the afterlife, our first thought was, “How possibly could that work?” Our immediate second thought was “We have to see it for ourselves.” After viewing the collection in person, it was evident that these pieces, despite the fact that some have skulls, were about celebrating life and the here and now while honoring the bond we make to another.

Imagine having your most cherished wedding moment captured forever as an original work of art. New York based artist Dan Angeli does just that, creating live wedding paintings that couples can enjoy for years to come. We were first introduced to Dan and his work when he painted at BB Featured Bride Ashley’s wedding at The Green Building. After hearing Ashley rave about the painting that he made for her and wife Tiffany, we couldn’t wait to feature the artist in our Industry Influencer Interview series.

Here, Dan talks about his artistic beginnings and fine art background, how a one-time request to paint at a friend of friend’s wedding lead to a successful career as live event painter, and the artists who most inspire him.
